Got a pest problem?
Frequently Asked
Questions
Do you recommend having the wasp nest removed?
It is totally up to you if you want it removed or left in situ. It causes no harm being left alone and 99.9% of the time it will never be re-used by another queen wasp. The nest will stay redundant for many years. Leaving it in situ will most likely prevent another nest being built there again.
However, if the nest is too close for comfort then get in touch with us about our wasp control services.
Do honeybees die off during the winter?
Honeybees pause their foraging for food when all plants have perished or the temperature drops below a certain threshold that affects their flight. Consequently, they rely on the nectar and pollen accumulated from spring to autumn to sustain and nourish the colony throughout the winter. When spring arrives, the bees eagerly resume their quest for pollen and nectar once again, diligently collecting and ensuring the colony’s continued survival and growth. At BEEKIND Pest Control, we acknowledge the significant role honeybees play in our ecosystem. We specialise in fostering their well-being while providing effective live bee nest removal and rehoming.
How long do bees live for?
Bees and wasps generally have a life span of 30 days. Some less and some a little longer depending on their role in the colony.
The queen honeybee lays around 100 eggs a day and night in the spring, then ramps up to 2000 eggs a day and night in the middle of the summer. Then back to 100 eggs a day and night around late autumn. So expect that number of bees to perish after 30 days during that part of the season.
Are wasps good pollinators and should l spray them?
Yes, wasps are indeed good pollinators; however, there is no shortage of wasps in the UK. A queen wasp can live for up to 12 months, during which she can lay up to 100 eggs per day and night, resulting in approximately 1500 new queen wasps around September. It is highly advised against attempting to spray wasps yourself, as using the wrong insecticide can further antagonise them, leading to potential attacks if threatened. Wasps are capable of stinging multiple times and can cause allergic reactions. At BEEKIND Pest Control, we use a chemical that does not antagonise wasps, and we guarantee our treatment for the season. If the wasps are not eradicated within one week, we will provide a free re-treatment of the nest.
How do l know if the woodworm l have is active?
To spot new and historic woodworm is quite simple in most cases. Woodworm is normally active on untreated surfaces so if the wood has a laquer or varnish then you won’t need to worry about having active woodworm, however, if you are unsure then just call us and we can come out and check and help with active woodworm control.
New woodworm activity has frass coming out of the holes. A bit like if you were to drill a 2mm drill bit into the wood, it would look like a fresh hole with frass coming out of the hole or even on the floor below.
Inactive woodworm, or historic woodworm has black holes.
If unsure, we can come out and inspect and let you know.
How do l know if l have rats or mice in my loft?
The best way to determine the presence of rodents in your loft is by examining their droppings. Mice droppings resemble grains of rice, while rats leave behind larger, tapered droppings that are black or dark brown. Squirrels, on the other hand, have droppings of various colors that resemble coffee beans. Additionally, look out for any signs of bite marks on bags or items stored in the loft. You may also detect an ammonia smell or notice large holes in the insulation, often accompanied by trails leading to them. If you’re unsure about the type of rodent or require assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us at BEEKIND Pest Control.
