These remarkable creatures are indispensable to our ecosystem, not only for their pollination work but also for their intricate social structures. A worker honey bee’s lifespan is about six weeks, during which she tirelessly collects nectar and pollen, maintains the hive, and supports the queen. The queen bee lays thousands of eggs daily during peak summer (around 2000 a day). She can live up to four years in the colony once she is diligently cared for, provided she emits a strong pheromone scent and lays eggs effectively.
In winter, the queen pauses egg-laying, and the colony keeps her warm and fed until spring when she resumes laying eggs. A typical winter colony is around 5,000 bees strong and relies on the stored supplies collected throughout the year.
Honey bees can build combs up to a meter deep each year, with a typical colony storing around 50 kilograms of honey. The combs have different sections for honey, nectar, pollen, and brood (baby bees). We have witnessed honeybee colonies as long as 8m and 5m wide. In chimneys we see colonies around 3-5m deep so the longer a colony is left, the deeper it will continue to build. This can then cause additional stress to weak building fabric that could collapse under sheer weight of the honeycomb, which in some instances we have removed up to 200kg of comb, 60,000 bees and is all commanded by 1 queen. When we find her, we can then get all the bees in the nuc box and relocate them, either to our apiary or to a beekeeper that is over 5 miles away. The temperament of honeybees can change depending on the time of year, available resources, if they are under attack from wasps or hornets, or if the hive is being internally attacked by hive mites, wax moth or american foul brood disease. We can only save healthy colonies and those that haven’t been sprayed with a chemical.
During our bee removal services, locating the queen is critical, as her presence in a temporary hive box encourages the colony to follow. Once secured, she releases her scent, drawing the colony to her. This process allows us to transfer the bees to our apiary safely.
In peak summer, a colony can range from 30,000 to 60,000 bees, and we strive to save as many as possible. We sometimes collaborate with local beekeepers to minimise transfer risks and ensure the bees are rehomed promptly. Please be aware, honeybee removals are generally more than what people anticipate due to the amount of work required to get to the colony, the amount of work to safely remove the hive, which involves removing building fabric, the dangers involved in being stung and ensuring the colony is saved and re-homed. Without the queen, the bees will not leave the site and can pose a threat to builders, roofers or owners if she is not found. It takes a trained eye to find the queen and lots of patience. She is the best player of hide and seek, so there is no time-frame of how quickly the colony can be removed, as it is all dependent on locating the queen, getting her in a queen catcher, then placing her in a temporary nuc box, waiting a few hours for the 60,000 bees to go in the box, then drive a few hours away to re-home them. All this has to take place before the clean up and bee proofing measures can be carried out, and the last stage being the reinstatement works. This can be rebuilding a wall, a chimney stack, re felting and re tiling a roof, refitting floor boards or even blocking holes and fitting new plasterboard on internal walls. They do not make getting to them easy!
