Harlequin Ladybirds: Friend or Foe?

25th October 2024

If you’ve spotted ladybirds around your home, be advised they might not be the friendly natives you’re used to! It might just be you’re saying hello (and perhaps shortly goodbye, with a little help from Beekind) to the Harlequin Ladybird. Officially known as Harmonia axyridis, they’ve caused quite the stir since arriving in the UK. But where exactly did they come from, why are they here, and what impact are they having? In this blog, we’ll dive into the world of these vibrant little beetles and look at how Beekind Pest Control can help if they’re taking over your space.

Where Did Harlequin Ladybirds Come From?

The Harlequin Ladybird is native to Asia but was introduced to Europe, and later the UK, as a natural predator for aphids in greenhouses. Their appetite for garden pests was supposed to help, but they ended up being a bit too good at their job.

When Were They Introduced to the UK?

The first Harlequin Ladybirds were recorded in the UK in 2004, and since then they’ve spread like wildfire. With their fast breeding and aggressive nature, they quickly made their way across Bath, Bristol, Keynsham, Yate and beyond! Today, these invaders are common in homes and gardens, particularly in the autumn when they’re looking for somewhere warm to hibernate.

How Have They Spread?

Their spread has been rapid and widespread. Harlequin Ladybirds are highly adaptable and outcompete our native ladybirds for food and shelter. They thrive in a variety of environments, from urban areas to woodlands and even inside homes. With fewer natural predators and the ability to live for months without food, it’s no wonder they’ve become so dominant.

What’s the Impact?

While Harlequin Ladybirds may seem harmless, their presence can lead to significant problems. Not only do they outcompete native ladybirds, but they can also bite humans, and in large numbers, they leave behind foul-smelling yellow stains. This is particularly annoying when they invade homes in autumn.

How to Spot a Harlequin Ladybird

These pests are easy to identify:

  • Varied colouration: Red, orange, or black with varying numbers of spots.
  • Larger than native ladybirds, up to 8mm.
  • M-shaped mark on their head.
